democracy...

no matter how you vote
the government gets elected!

politics

now i'm not a student of politics by any stretch of the imagination. i don't pretend to understand the complicated process that is our parliamentary system.

all the infighting, backstabbing and posturing.

and i'm o.k. with that.
(my lack of comprehension - not the infighting, backstabbing and posturing)

i mostly try not to get too involved unless i can get a chuckle out of it.

i have one basic premise that dictates my response to most invitations to political debate, which is...

'the only problem with democracy is that no matter who you vote for - the government gets elected.'

so it's a cynical view.
we're talking politics here...where cynicism is your friend.

and why shouldn't it be? if there were just a little more cynicism during the election, campbell may not have been elected in the first place.
someone else would have been elected in his stead, so i guess that's not much of an argument but it's hard not to be cynical when one looks at government at any level
from the sunshine coast regional district (s.c.r.d.) right on up to the prime minister's office.
or worse...the office of the president of the united states of america. nothing keeps cynicism better fed than a steady diet of american politics!

when i heard the news that campbell was arrested in hawaii on drunk driving charges, i have to admit that my first thoughts were not of shock or outrage. they were, instead, about what the next days headlines might read.
imagine my disappointment this morning when i saw 'premier arrested for drunk driving' on cover of the vancouver sun.
perhaps the sunday province will go with what i'd hoped to see today...

"BOOK HIM DANO!"

if they don't..you saw it here first folks.

the mug shot helped to bounce me back and i quickly fantasized that this mug shot would quickly become the most downloaded photo in british columbian history.

no longer daunted by the uninspired headline, i read on.

and here's where my cynicism comes in again...

when our mr. campbell jets back to maui to face the music in march...is someone we can trust going to make sure we don't foot the bill?

is there anyone we can trust?

i'm sure there are plenty people out there who are ready to pounce on the premier when he touches down on b.c. soil. and fair enough too. if he can disregard the laws of a community in which he is a guest...how does he behave where he is head honcho?
the outrage, the gleeful hand rubbing and calls for his resignation should be a lot of fun to observe.

i think i'll make some popcorn and settle down in front of the t.v. for a few days.

for the record...if he were a politician that i liked (there have been 1 or 2) i would dismiss the behaviour as irrelevant to his mandate as premier...

since i think he sucks...i reckon we should nail him for it!
